ATLANTA SCIENCE FESTIVAL

Live Mural and Exhibition

March 24, 2018

Piedmont Park

For over a year,  Science.Art.Wonder has been pairing artists and scientists to foster exploration of the scientific world through the visual arts. This gallery space at the Atlanta Science Festival Expo exhibited the incredible masterpieces produced from these partnerships. Throughout the day, artists and scientists involved in the project were present to talk about their work and engage with the community.  Art narratives co-written by the artist and scientist accompanied each piece for further explanation of the art and science behind each piece.

Through these partnerships, we were able to highlight cutting-edge research currently happening at Emory and Georgia Tech. By creating this awareness, we exposed middle and high school students to a variety of research and fields they can be involved in at top-tier institutions around their community.

In addition, children were engaged through a “hydrophobic bookmark project” and invited to add to our on-going live mural. The mural was designed based on one of our artist’s pieces along with our logo. We hung the canvas squares as they were painted and a mural transformed as the day progressed. Artists and researchers painted alongside the kids for the mural.

In total, the Atlanta Science Festival Expo was attended by 50,000 people of all ages. Our Live Mural was especially located in an area called the STEAM zone, where Science.Art.Wonder (SAW) was the main exhibitor for that zone. SAW successfully brought Emory’s top researchers and students to interact with the community in a new, meaningful way.
