'Talk About Matter'
Artist's narrative
Digital

"Talk About Matter" is a digital artwork that explores the communication between living and dead matter underground. Researchers use computers to create communication between this living and dead matter, which is an important focus of Dr. Debjani Sihi's research lab. There are many ways in which the matter can communicate depending on the natural world around us. The depiction of a variety of naturally occurring phenomena in the art piece demonstrates how the communication is different when it rains and when there is a fire, when it's cold and when it's hot. This difference is hinted at with the crisp line drawing and simple colors within the computer versus the blended and shaded multicolor components in the background. The choice of digital art complements the introduction of technology in its use of studying the natural world. The world communicates with the living matter via N2O, CO2, and CH4, hot-keeping gasses that contribute to climate change, hence why the living matter is seen in the computer as "talking" about the gas molecules.
