This art piece is an abstract representation of the research being investigated at Emory regarding recent vaccination efforts for the chikungunya virus. In the bottom left corner, the sphere is a representation of the world, and the darker blue half is supposed to symbolize the main area of the globe (the western hemisphere) that is being strongly affected by the virus. Because the virus is transmitted via mosquitoes, mosquitoes are depicted hovering near the globe, almost as if on the attack. Along with the mosquitoes, that area is surrounded in an eerie green watercolor which is meant to almost float across the art like smoke. The shape of the disjoint linear black line that runs from the bottom corner all the way across the work through the blue circles on the top right represents one of the resulting graphs from their research. The overlaid line graph displays the percentage of BOB activity for each dosage and probe at different time points. I represented the positive trend a few months post-vaccination with the blue coloring in the top right corner and the circles. In the background of the scene, there are a few organic flowing shapes that mimic the focal point that is surrounded in pink and red. There are also floating RNA strands because CHIKV has the single-stranded RNA genome and syringes because that is one of the most common ways of injecting a vaccine into the bloodstream. Finally, the organic string-like shape across the center of the piece represents the virus, and the blue ropes are wrangling the virus to represent the mechanism being studied of blocking viral receptors from binding.
