CROSSING FIBERS

Arts-Science Symposium

March 23, 2018

Emory University

Quadrangle, Atwood Chemistry Building, Math and Sciences Building, White Hall

Crossing Fibers, our Science-Art Symposium in 2018, was attended by Emory and Georgia Tech college students, as well as 4th to 12th grade students, teachers, and families. SAW worked with Graduation Generation, an Emory initiative that works with public schools, to bring groups of 5th graders from underprivileged schools to our symposium.

Crossing Fibers featured the artwork resulting from our 102 artist-scientist matches for the past year. Artists and scientists were encouraged to come and talk to the community about their work in the form of elevator pitches and interactive demos. Our symposium, situated at Emory University, highlighted Emory’s diverse talents as well as research. Emory students stopped by and learned about on-going science they could get involved in, while many introduced themselves to the PI (principal investigator) or lab representative involved in the science that grabbed their attention most. Through Crossing Fibers, SAW connected undergraduate and graduate students with researchers and peers conducting fascinating science.  Crossing Fibers exposed them to interdisciplinary science, and showed our Emory community the value of merging the arts and science.

For educators, teachers were able to get new ideas to implement in their classrooms, and will be followed up with a list of resources based on the demos our artist-scientist matches created. Through SAW,  next year Emory will spearhead new ways to teach science in K-12 education in Georgia as we bring our demos and artist-researcher matches to schools and lead new pedagogies.
