Narrative

This is an abstract wire sculpture with yarn detailing. I created it to be a visual representation of some of the recent research of Dr. Margalit. The sculpture’s curved frame and the way its shape changes as it is viewed from different angles represents his research on mapping class groups and the symmetries of surfaces. Dr. Margalit’s award-winning article “The Mathematics of Joan Birman” inspired the addition of the yarn; specifically, I kept the topics of Lorenz knots and the geodesics of closed surfaces in mind when using the yarn to break up negative space and create dimension. The work of Ruth Asawa influenced the shape of this piece and my choice of medium.
